Arrest Records in Story County
Story County Sheriff's deputies make arrests in unincorporated areas and in other assignments within their authority. Ames, Nevada, Huxley, and other municipal police departments keep reports for their own arrests. Iowa State University Police handles campus incidents, while Iowa State Patrol and other Iowa DPS officers handle state-highway or state-law matters. A person arrested by any of these agencies may be booked into the Story County Jail.
An arrest history is not a single county database. The officer's agency keeps the report and probable-cause material. The jail keeps intake, custody, bond, and release information. The clerk keeps the filed case. Iowa DCI compiles qualifying fingerprint-linked events and later dispositions. Each product has a different scope, so a complete Story County arrest search follows the record across custodians.
Agency borders can make the first step less obvious. A campus arrest may come from Iowa State University Police, and a highway event may belong to Iowa State Patrol even though booking occurred at the county jail. The arresting-agency field is the best clue to the report custodian.
Start With Story County's Roster
The county's Current Inmate Roster gateway is the durable official route to the live vendor list. It is the quickest place to check present custody after intake. Search or browse by name, then verify booking timing, arresting agency, charge, bond, and custody fields that the live interface makes public. Vendor controls can change, and the county gateway is more stable than saving the vendor address.
The official gateway directs readers to the current Story County jail list.
A missing name does not disprove an arrest. Intake may still be underway, the person may have been released, or the record may use a different name format.
Story County Arrest Lookups
Begin with the most time-sensitive record and then work toward the lasting ones. If the roster is empty, call the jail or arresting agency. For an older event, ask for the agency report and check the filed court outcome. State systems add context but do not replace county sources.
- Open the Story County Current Inmate Roster and allow time for jail intake.
- Call Story County communications at 515-382-6566 or contact the arresting agency to confirm routing and request its report.
- Search Iowa Courts Online by name and Story County, then read each filed count and disposition.
- For one's statewide Iowa history, request a DCI record check; for prison or supervision, use Iowa DOC Offender Search.
- Submit a specific chapter 22 records request when online sources do not provide the needed public document.
- Use VINELink for custody notifications, not as a complete arrest-history archive.
Note: Phone requests are not accepted for DCI record checks, though the jail and local agencies can provide routing by phone.
Four Story County Arrest Records
One arrest can generate four related records. The police or sheriff report describes the officer's actions, arrest authority, and available incident facts. The booking file records intake and custody. The court file begins when a complaint or other charging document is filed. The DCI history depends on fingerprint submission and lawful dissemination. A nonfingerprinted arrest will not create the expected DCI cycle.
| Record | Custodian | Best Use |
|---|---|---|
| Agency report | Arresting police agency or sheriff | Incident narrative, arrest basis, officer, and evidence references |
| Jail booking | Story County Jail | Intake, booking charge, bond, custody, and release |
| Court case | Story County Clerk | Filed count, hearings, disposition, and sentence |
| State history | Iowa DCI | Releasable fingerprint-associated Iowa history |
These products should be compared, not treated as duplicates. The Story County court case lookup supplies the outcome that a live jail entry cannot.
Arrest Records: What They Contain
A Story County arrest report may include an agency case number, arrest date and place, legal authority, officer, alleged statutes, narrative, witnesses, evidence, and transport destination. The booking layer adds the jail's intake data. Some fields can be withheld because of an active investigation, juvenile confidentiality, medical privacy, victim protection, or another legal restriction.
| Booking Number | The jail's identifier for a specific intake event. |
|---|---|
| Booking Date & Time | When jail intake was recorded, which may follow the arrest time. |
| Arresting Agency | The office that owns the officer's report and related request channel. |
| Charges | Booking allegations or holds, which can differ from later filed counts. |
| Bond | Public bond amount, type, or release terms when entered and releasable. |
| Booking Photograph | Not automatically public in every circumstance; request from the jail under chapter 22. |
| Release Status | Current custody, release, or transfer information available from the jail. |
A juvenile arrest is generally confidential. A signed adult DCI release does not turn a juvenile record into a public document.
Story County Fingerprints Reach DCI
Jail staff confirm identity, inventory property, screen medical and mental-health needs, take a booking photograph, and capture fingerprints when required. Fingerprint submission links the arrest cycle to Iowa DCI's statewide repository. The Judicial Branch later reports the court disposition, allowing DCI to associate the outcome with the arrest. Delays, missed fingerprints, or an unmatched disposition can leave gaps between systems.
A public DCI name check costs $15 for each last name searched and covers Iowa only. Without the subject's signed authorization, DCI does not release completed deferred judgments or arrests more than 18 months old that have no final disposition. A “no record” response can therefore mean no record, nonreleasable history, or confidential juvenile history. For one's own check, use the DCI Criminal History Record Check information and provide exact identifying details.
DCI accepts online, mail, fax, email, and in-person submissions, but not phone requests. Online processing is generally stated as one to three days depending on volume and staffing, while the broader FAQ range is two to five business days. Both the request and billing forms are needed online.
Recent Story County Bookings
Story County publishes a Current Inmate Roster, not a separate historical daily booking log or sheriff arrest blotter. The roster is a snapshot of custody. Entries may appear after intake and roll off after release or transfer. Ames Police media releases and monthly activity reports add official incident or aggregate context, but they are not substitutes for a person-specific arrest record search.
The sheriff's jail information describes the Story County Justice Center's direct-supervision facility, which opened in 2002.
The building was designed for 104 beds, while the current sheriff division description reports an operating capacity of 122. Those figures describe different stages of the same facility.
Request Story County Arrest Reports
The Story County Sheriff's Office does not label a separate public Records Division. Direct sheriff-report and booking requests to the proper office at the Justice Center. The Story County Open Records Request form asks for requester contact details, a specific description, and whether the record will be examined or copied. Include the event date, location, agency case or booking number, and preferred delivery. Current sheriff copy fees and a guaranteed response time were not found, so request an estimate.

Call for records routing.
Agency choice matters. Ames Police Records at 515 Clark Avenue accepts walk-in, phone, or email inquiries during weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; its records number is 515-239-5135 and email is policerecords@cityofames.org. Nevada and Huxley police reports stay with those departments. Campus arrests route to Iowa State University Police, while state-highway arrests route to Iowa DPS.
Iowa Code chapter 22 allows inspection and copying of open records, but it does not require an agency to create a new report. Active investigative material, protected victim or juvenile information, medical details, and sensitive identifiers may be withheld or redacted. A denial should identify its legal basis.
Beyond a Story County Booking
The Justice Center replaced a 31-bed linear jail that had operated since 1968. Its 2002 direct-supervision model places detention staff in housing areas and holds classifications from minimum through maximum, including work release. A custody entry says little about what may happen after intake. Initial appearance, release terms, charging decisions, transfer, treatment, and community supervision all create later records elsewhere.
The sheriff's jail programs page identifies Jail Diversion and REACH as local services beyond intake.
Jail Diversion reconnects eligible people with mental-health support, while REACH addresses criminal thinking, substance use, and mental health among higher-risk participants. These programs do not change the need to read the court disposition.
Older Story County Custody Records
Once a person leaves the county jail, different tools answer different questions. Iowa DOC Offender Search covers prison, probation, parole, work release, and community-based programs. It accepts name, offender number, sex, location, offense, and county-of-commitment fields. The portal says its information is updated weekly, so it is not a live Story County booking list.
The state locator provides the supervision and corrections layer after the county arrest process.
A Story County court docket should still be checked for the sentence, probation order, or revocation filing behind the status.
VINELink serves a narrower purpose: custody and release notifications.
Use notification status as a supplement. For an older arrest history, return to the arresting agency report, filed court case, and one's DCI record.
Arrest Records vs Conviction Records
An arrest means an officer used legal authority to take a person into custody or begin the arrest process. It is not a judicial finding of guilt. Booking charges record the reason delivered to jail. The Story County Attorney can decline, dismiss, substitute, or add charges, and each court count can end differently.
| Arrest Record | Conviction Record |
|---|---|
| Created by the arresting agency and jail | Created through the Iowa District Court case |
| Shows an arrest and booking allegation | Shows a judgment of guilt on a specific count |
| Kept in agency and jail systems | Kept by the clerk and reported to DCI |
| May end in release, no filing, dismissal, or acquittal | Leads to sentence and may later involve appeal or lawful expungement |
A dismissed or not-guilty Story County charge may qualify for Iowa Code section 901C.2 relief, but the order and updates should be verified at both the court and DCI layers.
Note: An arrest is not proof of guilt, and a booking charge may never become the charge filed in court.
